Purpose Limited evidence-based guidelines for test selection continue to result in inconsistency use and interpretation speech-language pathology. A major barrier is the lack of explicit consistent adoption a validity framework by our field. In this viewpoint, we argue that adopting conceptual Standards Educational Psychological Testing (American Research Association et al., 2014) would support both development more meaningful feasible clinical tests appropriate Method We describe evaluate consider its relevance how could be integrated into practice include examples it applied common decisions. costs benefits framework, from perspectives pathologists, clients, developers. Results The Standards' clarifies complex issues shifting focus decisions pathologists make based on results. By focusing decisions, requires critical evaluation use, rather than evaluating against sets criteria. Adopting has potential appreciable improvement way are used valued across profession. Conclusions Speech-language developers, clients will benefit improved assessment practices. It recommended regulators, professional associations, universities, researchers adopt endorse as best moving forward. This viewpoint proposes series first steps toward supporting uptake research practice.
